Will Solar Panels Increase the Value of Your Home? Probably, and here are the studies to prove it

Did you have the nightmare again?

The one where you’re at home, watching a surveyor snoop around your house with a stern face, a clipboard, and a pen?

You’ve worked hard for decades to pay off your mortgage.

After all, bricks and mortar are a solid investment, right?

You have plans for the equity in your home. Hell, your grandkids have plans for the equity in your home.

This surveyor’s assessment will have a serious impact on your financial future.

The moment of truth arrives.

The surveyor looks at you over her headteacher spectacles, her lips form a thin, hard line.

She looks you dead in the eye and says the words every homeowner dreads.

‘I’m afraid your home has decreased in value.’

And that’s when you wake up in a cold sweat.

Panting and mumbling into the darkness about house prices and retirement until your spouse shakes you and reassures you that none of it was real.

Now I want you to imagine a different outcome.

One where the surveyor tells you your home value hasn’t just increased in line with other houses in your area. It’s worth even more.

Yes, even more than the house of that annoying neighbour with the leaf blower.

Why?

Because your house has solar panels.

And this time it’s not a dream.

The numbers don’t lie.

A lot of serious people have done some very serious research into this and found the same thing over and over again.

Think about it.

Going solar saves you a lot of money on your monthly bills. A house that’s cheaper to run is going to be worth more.

It’s just like when gas central heating started replacing coal and wood (remember coal??)

The banks are clued in, too. They’re willing to offer bigger loans for homes with lower monthly bills, because the savings impact buyer affordability.

And by 2030, most rental homes will need to have an EPC rating of C or above, making solar very attractive to landlords.

Not to mention that solar helps the planet, and the younger generations are willing to pay for that.

But don’t take our word for it...

The research behind the numbers

Those serious studies we talked about? We’ve summarised them here so you can see for yourself.

Study 1: In 2022, Moneysupermarket investigated how getting a better Energy Performance Certificate impacts your home’s value. It turns out that transitioning from a G rating to an A rating can increase the value of your home by as much as 14%.

Study 2: Admiral, the insurance company from the telly, found that solar panels are the most effective home improvement you can make if you want to significantly increase the value of your home.

According to their data, homes with solar panels saw an increase in value of over 25% compared to other homes in the same area. This is because a huge 75% of homebuyers take energy-saving measures into account when choosing a home.

Study 3: A UK government study by the Department of Energy & Climate Change examined over 300,000 home sales. They concluded that homes that implemented energy-saving measures experienced an average increase in value of 14%.

Study 4: An in-depth 2024 study by the Center for International Development (CID) at the Universidad de Navarra found causal evidence of households’ willingness to pay for a higher energy-rated property. This study found that people were willing to pay a 1-3% premium for a higher energy efficiency rating at the national level, and a 3-6% premium in the London market.

Study 5: In 2024, Swansea University & the University of Birmingham teamed up for a major academic study that analysed over 1.5 million UK property sales. They found strong evidence that solar panels directly increased property prices by a premium of 6.1% to 7.1%.

Study 6: A 2023 study by home improvement experts, BoxT, found that installing solar panels increases property value by 14% on average.

Study 7:  Effective Home, a UK-based renewable tech company, did a study in 2020 and found the same thing. Sale prices for homes with solar systems increased by approximately 14%.

But solar panels are so ugly!

Oh, I see, you’re thinking of the old style blue panels covered in bird poop?

They don’t make them like that anymore.

The newer solar panels are sleek and discreet, you might even say stylish.

You can even get them in strips that have been designed to look like roof shingles and blend in with your actual roof.

We know what you’re thinking.

Yeah, that’s all great, but those numbers are averages. How do I know how much, if anything, solar will increase the value of my home? How do I know if going solar would be worth it for me?

You’re right. And we’ve prepared for this.

Remember those 7 studies? Well, we’ve used them to create a clever algorithm that tests the variables in the studies against your individual home specs.

All you have to do is give us a few details about your home, and we’ll compare it with the research to work out how much solar is likely to increase home value for you.

Your home, specifically.

Just fill in our 2-minute questionnaire, and we’ll send you back a number, telling you how much solar is likely to increase the value of your home.

Easy.

Kind regards,
Alexander
